Review: Hard Corps Uprising (XBLA/PSN)

Are you a fan of Contra? Do you enjoy brutally hard games? Well, then Hard Corps Uprising, the new Contra game from Arc System Works & Konami, is for you!

This new game, available on Xbox Live Arcade & PlayStation Network, is actually a spin-off of the game “Contra: Hard Corps” that appeared on the Sega Genesis. The gameplay is your standard Contra fare, but it has a few minor tweeks that distinguish it. These few minor tweaks, such as dashing and strafing, manage to both distinguish Hard Corps from previous entries in the series, and add depth and even more difficulty to the experience. Yes, you read that right; it adds even more difficulty. In fact, this may be one of the most difficult games in this series since the original Contra, pushing the player's ability to dodge enemy fire coming from all angles and defeat enemies at the same time to the edge.

The sound in this game is absolutely fantastic, coming from composer Daisuke Ishiwatari, who is most known for his work in the Guilty Gear and Blazblue series. It's an amazing metal track that fits the atmosphere of the game perfectly, and gets your blood pumping as you go from level to level. The only complaint I have is the sound effect the enemies make when they die, since they all make the exact same noise. It's a bit repetitive and annoying, but it's easy to ignore as you concentrate more on surviving all the things flying at you trying to kill you on screen.

As far as the visuals go, all the character's designs are fantastic and unique, reminiscent of the style of Guilty Gear, and rendered in stunning 2D. However, the 3D renderings of the environments, even though each is vastly different from one another, aren't the best quality I've seen this generation.
For 15 dollars though, one can hardly complain! All in all, Hard Corps Uprising is an incredibly enjoyable and difficult game, which is sure to appeal to Contra fans and anyone else who likes a challenge. It's absolutely worth the money to purchase, so try downloading it and giving it a chance today!
